It might seem pretty basic, but you really do need to get enough sleep to grow muscle faster.

Why does sleep make a big difference in whether or not you grow muscle faster?

Well, let's simply take a look at what happens when you DON'T get proper sleep each night...

1) Your mental focus decreases.

Research has shown that if you do not adequately rest just for one night, your ability to focus your mind on completing tough tasks decreases.

2) Your physical performance will be low.

Without proper sleep, your strength levels will decrease, and you'll end up using less weight and/or performing fewer reps than you would normally be capable of, both of which are required to grow muscle faster.

Your bottom line muscle gains are ultimately determined by the steady increases in poundage that you are able to make on all of your exercises, and keeping your strength at top levels is critical when you are trying to grow muscle faster.

3) Muscle recovery is affected.

As you are probably already aware, your muscles do not actually grow while you are IN the gym. Rather, they grow while you are OUT of the gym, eating and resting.

While you sleep, your body is working hard towards the recovery and remodeling of damaged muscle tissue.

In addition to your muscles, your immune system, central nervous system, and joints need to recover too.

4) The production of certain hormones is compromised.

You limit the production of some of the most important muscle building and fat burning hormones that circulate inside your body if you do not get ample sleep.

I'm talking specifically about cortisol, testosterone, growth hormone, and insulin.

To put it simply, when you don't sleep, each and every one of these important hormones is affected...

a) Cortisol: This catabolic stress hormone increases abdominal fat storage and helps breakdown muscle tissue down for energy.

Research shows that when you don't get sufficient sleep, your body produces more cortisol.

b) Testosterone: The most important hormone when it comes to building muscle. The more testosterone you have, the more muscle you can build.

Testosterone levels decrease when you are sleep deprived.

c) Growth Hormone: Regenerates the body and plays a large role in building and maintaining muscle.

When you're asleep, your body maximizes its growth hormone levels.

Without enough sleep, the natural surge of growth hormone is compromised.

d) Insulin: Without enough insulin, your body does not maximize its uptake of important nutrients into your body cells.

Sleep deprivation can result in an increase in your body's insulin resistance levels. Your body is affected because it will then release higher-than-normal amounts of insulin to compensate. When your body overproduces insulin, you run the risk of diabetes, heart disease, or storing excess fat.

That said, how much sleep do you need then to grow muscle faster?

As with most things, it's certainly an individual factor and varies from person to person.

Giving your body at least 8 hours of sleep every night is a good way to go. Don't scrimp on sleep when building muscle; if you need 9 hours or more, go for it. Your goal is to get enough sleep to be at 100% performance levels in the day.

Getting enough sleep will help you to build strength and grow muscle faster because it will:

- Help you to remain mentally focused and energetic
- Improve your strength
- Help your body recover properly in between training sessions
- Lower cortisol levels
- Boost your testosterone levels
- Increase growth hormone levels
- Help your body lower its insulin resistance

That should be plenty of incentive right there to start paying close attention to how much sleep you're getting each night.

Pleasant dreams!
